Welcome to the pickle's Macintosh serial number decoder. The decoder script has undergone a thorough revision and now supports more models than ever before. If you run across an unsupported model, e-mail me with as much data as you know about the computer (model, model number, CPU speed, where it was made, when it was made, etc.) and I may be able to add support in a future revision. How To Use This Decoder

The first two numbers of the serial number is the year of your Club Car golf cart. Here are two examples: If the first three digits of the serial number are “A00”, you own a 2000 Club Car DS. To use this decoder, simply type in your Mac's serial number (the decoder is case-insensitive) and click the Decode button or press return/enter. Any spaces or asterisks can be left out, as they are not considered to be part of the serial number. I have expanded the regex string matching, and just about any serial number from any Mac hardware will validate. If you get the 'invalid serial number' message and believe the serial number to be valid, please e-mail it to me, along with a thorough description of the product.

Important note: if what you think is the serial number starts with 'BCG', congratulations! You've found the FCC ID. The two are commonly confused on early Macs, particularly the 128. Early Macs had the serial number located below the lower-left corner of the screen, not on the back. Some Mac Plus models had the serial number sticker on the bottom of the case. If you enter an FCC ID by accident, the decoder will remind you of this and instruct you where to look for the proper serial number.

If You Get an Error

If you get an error or 'unknown' value, e-mail me the serial number string you put in, along with as much data as you know about the Mac. This includes the specific kind of Macintosh it is, approximately when it was made, etc. I can't do much of anything if you don't tell me what Mac you're trying to find out about!

Don't worry. If you e-mail me, I won't share your name or any other personally identifiable information with anyone, although I reserve the right to use the serial number in collaboration with other developers for the purpose of improving this decoder.

Known Bugs

  • Does not work to magically reveal working serial numbers for software you've pirated. Don't expect this 'bug' to be fixed. Ever. Those of you attempting to use this decoder to pirate software are having your IP addresses logged, and they will be reported to your ISP. Don't believe me? Have a gander at these. I WILL report you, and you WON'T like the results. Do I make myself clear?
  • Still working on a good means to differentiate between two-character and single-character factory codes for Fremont, CA. Right now, some serial numbers for Macs made in the early and mid 1990s starting with 'Fd' (d is a digit) aren't properly recognised.
  • Still working on a good means to tie year codes to model number so G5s and the like aren't given 'made in 1984' designations.

How It Works

WARNING: Geek alert! If you don't like math, you can skip this section.

The methodology behind this decoder is reasonably simple. The prefix consists of one or two letters (and/or numbers) designating a factory code:

  • F: Fremont, California, USA
  • CK: Cork, Ireland
  • SG or E: Singapore
  • FC: Fountain, Colorado, USA
  • EE: Taiwan
  • XA, XB: Elk Grove, California
  • MB: Malaysia
  • QT, UV: Taiwan
  • YM, VM: China

In our example serial number, F 4412SAM0001, we see that the Mac in question was made in Fremont, California.

The first numerical character* indicates the last digit of the year of production. In all cases prior to the Mac Plus, this will be in the 1980s. Referring back to our example again, we see that the Mac with serial number F 4 412SAM0001 was made in 1984.

* Not always. In 1990 and 1991, a number of Macs were made at Fremont with 'F1' or 'F3' as the factory designator, and modern build-to-order Macs may have a number preceding the letter in the factory code.

The next two digits indicate the week of the year of production. In our example, we see that the Mac with serial number F4 41 2SAM0001 was made in the 41st week of the year.

The next three characters are a three-digit base-34 unique identifier. (The letters 'O' and 'I' were not used, presumably to avoid confusion with the numbers zero and one.) If we assume Apple began each week at 000, this identifier becomes an ordinal indicating the model's production order that week. Our example is number F441 2SA M0001. To convert this from base-34 to decimal:

So, our example was the 3206th Mac produced that week. It is interesting to note that this system allows for a per-model production capacity of 39,304 Macs per week, or just over two million per 52-week year, assuming duplicate unique IDs from different factories are not allowed.

The remainder of the serial number is the model number. In our example, we see that the Mac with serial number F4412SA M0001 has a model number of M0001, indicating it is a Mac 128. Later models use a three-character code in place of the model number; perhaps Apple was running out of serial number ink?

Decryption of VIN, especially if it's a free option is a very important thing for a modern driver. To find out the characteristics of the car, if there are several variants of models is quite problematic. Without proper information or experience, it is not difficult to make a mistake when buying a truck and selecting auto parts.

The VIN number is separated into three parts:

  • WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) is a worldwide manufacturer's index that's represented by 3 characters that shows the car manufacturer. The first symbol is the geographical area, the second is the country in this zone, the third is the car manufacturer itself.
  • VDS (Vehicle Description Section) is a descriptive part that consists of 6 signs and describes the technical specs of the vehicle. The sequence of signs is determined by the manufacturer. As a rule, there is data on the model of the vehicle, the type of body, engine and other. The truck VIN decoder will easily cope with this part of the code.
  • VIS (Vehicle Identification Section) is the distinguishing part (consists of 8 characters that end the VIN. The last 4 characters are always only digits. Usually, the first symbol of the VIS (the tenth VIN symbol) contains data of the model year of the truck. The second character of the VIS (11th Symbol) contains data about the vehicle company.

How Truck Decoder Works?

The descriptive part (VDS) of the VIN code is a combination of six characters that take positions from the 4th to the 9th. If the manufacturer uses only five characters, the remaining positions on the right are filled with zeros. The truck vin decoder will prompt you what each of the symbols means.

The VDS index allows you to determine the model and modification of the truck in accordance with the documentation. The fourth character of the code characterizes the body type, the fifth character is the engine type, the sixth is the model. The following symbols can denote the car series, the maximum permissible mass, the type of chassis, cab, body, type of brake system and so on.

Let's take a look at an example with the decoding of the car VIN codes. Its fourth and fifth characters can provide the following values:

  • 11 or 12 - jeep (minivan) with a standard or raised roof;
  • 12 - jeep (minivan) with a raised roof;
  • 21, 22, 23 - a cargo bus with a standard, raised or high roof;
  • 31, 32, 33 - pick-up (truck) with single, one-and-a-half or double cabin (that's what we need in our case);
  • 41, 42, 43 - a bus with a standard, raised or high roof;
  • 52, 54 - a hatchback with two or four side doors;
  • 53 - sedan;
  • 63, 64 - a compartment or an elevator;
  • 72 - station wagon.

The last character in the VDS section is the ninth position of the code, which is allocated for giving the checksum. It is by the sign in the ninth position that the validation of the VIN-code is performed. It cannot be deciphered by the human, so using the decoder for trucks is a useful option.
